We recognize the significant contribution of Molly Williams, the first known female firefighter in North America. Ms Williams was a slave who belonged to a volunteer firefighter in New York City and during a influenza outbreak in 1818, there was a lack of men, so Molly assisted and pulled fire pumps through the deep snow. The volunteer firefighters were so impressed by Molly, she was made up as Volunteer 11 and it was said of her that she was a "good a fire laddie as many of the boys" #BlackHistoryMonth ... Today we recognize the contributions of the inventor Thomas Martin. Although Martins patent in 1872 was not the first example of a fire extinguisher, his invention was the first to develop a stable and reliable water supply for extinguishing systems. Martins improved extinguisher would be permanently installed within a structure that would have the ability to pump water with an affixed engine. His design allowed development of the sophisticated water based systems we have today.
Please make your Super Bowl Sunday a safe one ! Congratulations to @Buccaneers & @Chiefs good luck. #NFL #SuperBowl @BramptonFireES @PL416 @ChiefBoyes
Today we recognize the contributions of Garrett Morgan. Born in 1877, Garrett was a prolific inventor, businessman and community leader. One of his most notable inventions was the smoke hood. Mr. Morgan witnessed first hand the struggle firefighters had with smoke. He came up with a device that allowed a tube to collect clean air from the bottom of the floor to allow firefighters and mine workers to safely do their work. The invention received two gold medals from the International Fire Chiefs Association in 1916.

Between the crosses, row on row,

The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below."
